Lawyer Liz Lockwood of D.C. firm Ali & Lockwood LLP

Liz is a founding partner, experienced litigator, and creative problem solver. She is widely respected as an effective and efficient litigator adept at handling clients’ toughest problems. A natural and accomplished leader, Liz is particularly skilled at managing complex matters featuring many moving pieces, players, and obstacles. And her experience spans the full lifecycle of civil litigation, including pre-complaint investigation, motions to dismiss, fact and expert discovery, party and non-party depositions, motions for class certification, motions for summary judgment, pre-trial proceedings, trial, appeal, mediation, and settlement.

Liz recently won a federal appeal in a high-stakes gun violence matter related to a local mass shooting. She routinely represents current and former C-suite executives and employees in connection with federal and state investigations and related MDL litigation arising out of large-scale data breaches, and counsels third-party subpoena recipients on related issues. She also represents senior executives and federal employees in connection with internal investigations, and serves as lead counsel in several ongoing individual plaintiff and class action suits involving claims under the U.S. and state constitutions, the federal RICO statute, and various state and federal statutory and common law claims. Liz also serves as lead plaintiffs’ counsel in a constitutional challenge to Idaho’s public defense system, arguing and winning an appeal at the Idaho Supreme Court.

Liz previously practiced in Hogan Lovells’ Washington, D.C. Civil Litigation group, where she litigated commercial class actions represented companies in multidistrict litigations arising out of large-scale data breaches, antitrust, and pharmaceutical pricing issues. Liz was also selected to serve as the firm’s Pro Bono Senior Associate as a still-junior associate. She served as co-lead trial counsel in Tarlton v. Sealey, where she and her team recently won the largest wrongful conviction jury verdict in U.S. history ($75 million). Liz and her team received Public Justice’s 2022 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award for this historic win, and were named the American Lawyer’s Litigator of the Week. In recognition of her zealous representation of several death row prisoners, Liz also accepted (along with Katie) the ABA’s Death Penalty Representation Project’s Exceptional Service Award on behalf of Hogan Lovells in 2017.

Liz serves on the board of the Council for Court Excellence, a nonpartisan nonprofit working to build a more equitable justice system in the District. She  previously served on the board of Advancing Real Change, a non-profit that provides life history investigation services to juveniles and death-sentenced persons. She graduated cum laude from both the Georgetown University Law Center and the University of Notre Dame, where she also served as Student Body President on the university’s first all-female ticket. Before law school, Liz worked for Chicago’s 2016 Olympic Bid, where she learned how to manage complex, high-stress projects with ease. She is licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and New York.

Liz grew up in the Midwest with six siblings, and now lives in Washington, D.C. with her husband Mark and three very active young children.
